You all have helped me decide on other stuff, so I’m asking for your opinion here.
My pillow picking practices are pathetic. Most usually I see something on sale and grab it. I give myself bonus points if the wrapper happens to say something about it being good for those who sleep on their stomachs. The problem with this method is that I’m rarely satisfied with my choice.
I have this stubborn but practical attitude which suggests that expensive pillows are probably not better, but merely better marketed.
This morning I was changing the sheets and it dawned on me the last round of pillows I purchased aren’t properly plump. Indeed it’s time to do it all again. What do you suggest?

Ralph Lauren. Seriously.

I just went thru this process at a local Penny’s. I saw they were having a sale and dropped by to quickly purchase a couple of pillows. Oh nooo. The pillow section was akin to the cereal or chip aisle at the grocery store. There’s foam, down, feathered, stomach sleeping, back sleeping, anti-allergy, side sleeping, latex, memory foam, snore reduction, Euro, core, quilted, eliptical, air support, asthma friendly–and these are the one’s I can remember. The only person that knows what’s comfy for you–is you. And you can pay from about $8.00 to $150 depending on your preference.
I know I’ve been little help but I feel better.

My wonderful daughter – in the case of pillows it does pay to put more money into it. I can’t help you decide without actually holding the pillow and feeling it. I’m no help. Good luck.

The Lorax, thanks. I sure hope you are talking about the $30 microfiber version.
Randy, at least I know now that I’m not alone.
(And Mom – some help you are!

You can often find some of the cheaper ones on clearance. I just bought one of the classic down pillows for my mom for mother’s day and she loves it. I paid $40, I think.

Wow. That was a great bargain! I’ll keep my eyes open.
You know, another question I have is how often do you change your pillows? I swear when I was growing up, my dad used the same one for about 10 years.

I’m cheap and a student, so I haven’t changed mine since I moved out of the nest three years ago. Might be the time soon, though. I reckon more proper types change theirs more often–I used to drool a lot so they needed changing more often.
Hope that wasn’t TMI. How often do people wash their bedsheets?

Well since we’re oversharing here, I’ve gone from once a week to once every other week. I argue I’m being environmental and not lazy.
I still really beat the once a semester average by most college students.

Guess I should go do some laundry…
My grandma changes her sheets at least once a week. My mom always did 2 weeks, but we always showered before bed. I think that makes a difference.

Cindy, when you find out let me know! It’s been hit or miss for me. Once in a while I get lucky, but by the time I’m in the market for new ones they’ve stopped making it, or it’s not made the same anymore. :\

I change my pillow every six months but I can never have feathers. Every week for changing sheets but if I were rich and had servants I would change them daily. Yes, your daddy gets an unusual attachment for a pillow so now I just don’t tell him about a change anymore. In the ” old days” people didn’t change bedding like they do now but then they sometimes had “friends” to contend with

I remember reading Jackie Kennedy would make the White House staff change the sheets after her daily nap! Fresh sheets are pretty awesome.

I have found some wonderful down pillows for around $20/each at Tuesday Morning. I know they are hit or miss but it might be worth the trip just to see what they have.
The last two I just bought 6 months ago for 19.99 each are fabulous!
