The hard-copy textbook market will die in the next couple of years as devices like the iPad take over. You'll have Digital Rights Management, so you can't just swap/trade books, but they should be a little cheaper (no printing costs, no need to return or sell them)...

To me the textbook market is just one more false economy. We have a bunch of those in the states. I'm reminded of those $60 graduation gowns Elmbrook seniors will be using in a couple of weeks.

Heartbreaking, isn't it? The school book store charges $3oo for a book and then offers you $5 after the semester! Half Price is even worse, but at least they are out of your closet.

For future reference, I did have some success on Craig's List. I sold a $100-something book for $50 last January. I will try again in Aug/Sept with the remaining stack.

Back in the early 1970s, I attended Stout State University. They loaned us our books--like they do in high school. It was wonderful. No more purchasing a $300-something book just to find the Prof. didn't use it much, or dealing with the heartbreak of getting 5% back at resale time. Wish more schools would do that.

"The books I sold to Half Price Books? They probably cost about $500 from your friendly college bookstore."

Yeah, my wife had the same problem with all the books she bought while she was in nursing school. Lots of really expensive books that we got pennies for once we went to re-sell them. Then again, at least we got something for them.
