A personal rice failure

We’re eating Indian at home tonight. Before you get all impressed, dinner is chicken with one of these sauces and store bought naan. Oh, and rice.

I picked up Jasmine rice because I knew we were out. The problem is, Jasmine rice is for Thai, and we’re eating Indian. I needed Basmati rice. Sadly, we’re out of that, too.

We have sticky Japanese rice. We have sticky brown Japanese rice – my very favorite of all the rices. We have Arborio rice for risotto. We have long-grained white rice. We have long-grained brown rice. I think tucked back in a corner we even have a wild rice.

Still, no Basmati. So I’m substituting the long-grained white. I think the Jasmine will be too fragrant with the coconut curry.

Just learning to cook? Know your rices. It’s a tool you’ll have forever. And believe it or not, it can really make a difference.

I believe long-grain white rice is perfectly acceptable with Indian food. Basmati is regional; not everyone likes it.

Persian food, on the other hand, really needs Basmati–go figure. I’ll substitute Riceland extra-long, in a pinch, but I wouldn’t serve it to anyone’s mother. We had a lovely kebab kubideh, with chelo this evening.

I love to cook and create but yet am afraid to try to prepare Indian cuisine. I don’t know why but it seems like the flavor could get muddled easily and ruin things if one doesn’t know what they’re doing. What is something simple to start with if one is a novice at Indian cooking? I make a good Mulligatawny Soup but does that count?

    Buy the jar!

I do have a cookbook I picked up, but I’ve never been brave enough to go at it. I am going to try making my own naan. What I paid today was highway robbery!

The link above for ‘one of these sauces’ took me to an error page :(

Oh, my gosh! I have been cooking for almost 49
years and I didn’t know there were so many rices. These foods wouldn’t fly around here but they sound intresting.

    Ooh. I’ll check on that.

OK, should be all better. I put a www in front of the link.

Thanks! These recipes sound good – I think starting off with the Baked Chicken with Yogurt Sauce might be nice. The kids should like that one too.

I love the bitter flavor that is in so many Indian mixes.
