Dear Elmbrook

Oh yes, we’ve had our differences. Let me clue you in on another area where we disagree:

Tell your educators their politics should remain their private business.

I do not pay them to proselytize on the value of the health care fiasco or the evilness of Sarah Palin. If you want to have anything that resembles support in your district from this conservative majority populous, you will strongly encourage them to shut up.

Backstory from dinner last night –

A guy at the table was trying to decide whether or not to head to the principal with his daughter’s story. She had endured an hour lecture where the teacher called Sarah Palin an “idiot” eight times. The young lady counted. She happens to be a Sarah Palin fan.

I hope he does.

I don’t think a teacher should be paid according to their politics, they can believe whatever they want; they just can’t use their students as a captive audience. So how many A’s do you think this teacher hands out to someone who dares to disagree?

Bad call, Elmbrook. Get it together on this one or face the consequences of further lack of respect for your issues. It’s not like you have points to spare on that respect-o-meter.

This kind of crap has been going on there since I was sitting in a desk. I got roasted in Principles of American Democracy for having conservative values.

  2. Randy in Richmond says:

I find this incredible, saddening, and very illegal.

  3. Cindy says:

Randy, can you help me with the illegal part? Hey, I’d go there if I thought there were laws to cover it. I know this young lady would, too. (Not the youngest, BTW, in case anyone was wondering.)

  4. The Lorax says:

I remember getting reamed out for a half hour by my counselor for my beliefs.

  5. Anthony says:

This is something that happens everyday at almost every high school. Elmbrook’s high schools are no exception.

There are plenty of teachers who like to speak their minds. Usually, with the ones I have, the opinions I hear are very short, and in 95% of the cases, it doesn’t evolve into a discussion. And most of the opinions are just for the purpose of “Food for Thought”.

Last year, Brookfield East teachers Sherry Statza and Rudi Gutierrez dressed up as Sarah Palin and John McCain, respectively. I had Mrs. Statza as a teacher and she mainly used the day to talk about how elections work, the Democratic process, etc. She did not say any personal opinions about the election whatsoever. She also refused to answer questions about who she was voting for.

The above is a great example of how teachers can keep their mouths shut even when they are dressed in political costumes. I’m sure in regular attire, they can do it also.

Anthony: Great to hear that at least some teachers have some boundries.

Cindy: I hope the “guy at the table” heads first to the teacher to express his concerns. If not satisfied, only then seek out the principal.

    My two cents

  7. Cindy says:

I’m not sure what he’ll do. While we’ve had children at school together for years, we aren’t well acquainted.

I don’t think I’d go to the teacher first if I were that dad, though. It sounds like that teacher is rather fixed in his/her ways, and I’m rather fixed in mine. I don’t know that it would be a productive meeting.

  8. Ana M says:

Hear anything about the BE football coach and the AD having issues? It’s not pretty according to some people!

  9. Anthony says:

From what I’ve heard, funding for East’s football team is being drastically cut, and I’ve heard everything from a few coaches being cut to us not even having a team at all next year. Here’s what one football player told me:

“We’re going to have a team next year, but we’re going to suck. A lot of coaches are being cut next year, and I’ve even heard of the possibility of having only one coach for the entire team. That coach may not even be Coach Logue, and that’s what concerns me. If they replace him, the new guy may know nothing about the game.”

  10. Cindy says:

Well let’s hope that whatever they’re doing to East, they’re doing to Central.

  11. Whatever II says:

Anthony: Do you really think the community would support not having a football team? I know Elmbrook has a “5 Year Plan”. I’m sure somewhere in there are athletic cuts which include coaching positions. I know other districts that have cut coaching and the sports’ booster club (Is there one for B. East?) ended up fund-raising to pay the coaches.

  12. Cindy says:

Oooh. That could suck for Central. They are still in the red for that fancy field our school board (cough Wartman) suckered into a couple of years ago.

  13. Anthony says:

Yes, East has a club called the Spartan Athletic Booster Club. I’m pretty sure they’re cutting a few coaching positions, but yes, I don’t think the citizens and students would allow their schools to not have football teams.

At least they’re cutting money from Athletics instead of Academics.

  14. Rachel says:

Really? Can you not take a joke? Someone dressed up as Obama too. It was all in good fun, because it was an election year.
