Right now I’d say it’s 60/40 in favor of incumbent Jeff Speaker.
Challenger Steve Ponto has done nothing – still! – to show voters that he’d be any different. As such, I’m hearing a whole lot of “better the devil you know” discussion out there.
What’s worse, I’m also hearing from Ponto supporters who are questioning their decision to continue supporting Ponto.
Oops.
I will assume Steve Ponto is in this thing to win it. The election is four weeks away. If I don’t see something spectacular in two, then this race is going to Speaker.
That would be a shame. To me it would be the final confirmation that Brookfield is content in the role of a mediocre community. It will make moving away someday that much easier emotionally, but I was hoping for a good return on our 15+ years of home investment here. It doesn’t look like that will be happening.

I’m going to get brave and write about Elmbrook School District’s race to the bottom later today. We should have some lively discussion over that one.
Had a few long conversations on Friday and got the same ‘the devil you know’ replies from a number of people. You are right about Ponto distinguishing himself. I’d fancy changing Belling’s characterization to ‘Same and Samer’
Although, I do find it interesting that some very fervent Speaker backers from the last two elections that I know are now supporting Ponto. Most of them are very involved in the Waukesha Republican Party, but aren’t part of that crowd that you noted will probably want Speaker to scratch their back if he wins again.

Yes, Ponto has work to do if he really expects to win.
Maybe its just because I live near Ruby Isle (i.e. Speakerland) but as an actuary, I have a thing for numbers and odds and right now I’d put Speaker as an 80-20 favorite.
I’d love to be wrong, but I don’t think I am.

The guy’s barely teetering as capable. How the heck does he keep the job? But, like we said, it’s not like Ponto is making a strong go of it. That really surprises me, too. I would have thought Ponto a more clever campaigner.
