PPMS teacher arrested

January 28, 2010 at 8:52 pm --by Cindy · 24 Comments

Tech Ed teacher Jared Heckenkamp was arrested today at Pilgrim Park Middle School. The word is the arrest was for possession of child pornography.

Elmbrook, we have a problem. But then we’ve been down this road before, haven’t we?

Are we sure it was child pornography? Or just new SexEd curriculum required by the AB458 whose passage today you celebrated in an earlier blog topic?

It may be difficult to discern a difference between child pornography and newly required curriculum which must “… use instructional methods and materials… which do not promote bias against sexually active pupils …”

Perhaps he merely possessed materials which did not promote a bias against sexually active pupils?

We may be on a slippery slope with this new set of amendments to SexEd laws.

HOLY crap this guy was my Middle School Tech Ed teacher when I was in middle school, and yes, I claimed this one was a creepster too.

    Channel 4 has a story

I had him for Tech Ed. He was a nice guy, and was always there to help people out, but I could tell that something was wrong with him. His father teaches over at WHMS – I wonder what’s going on over there.

    Thanks, Anthony.

I’ll confess the youngest’s response to the news was, “I knew it!” Evidently she and her friends kept a not-so-nice nickname for him along the lines of that for which he was arrested.

He was always a little too close to the girls when he showed them how to cut the wood… i’m not trying at a sexual metaphor here, just there’s no other way to write it.

Anyhow, I didn’t go to PPMS–went to another district where he was before he moved over.

Wow Anthony … so the assumption is that because the son did something that his dad must have been his “teacher”??? My daughter happens to go to WHMS & had Mr. Heckenkamp (the father) as a teacher last year. He was nothing but a wonderful, kind & caring man! Be considerate & think about what this father is going thru!
Jared Heckenkamp just happens to live 5 doors down from me as well. I personally do not know him, he was very quite, but friendly if he was out giving his dog exercise. I’m not defending him but I’m also not going to pass judgement on someone without all the details.
Someone please tell me what the definition of a “child” is? I believe it’s anyone under the age of 18. This could be something that doesn’t necessarily involve ” little” children … it could be something that involves someone around the age of 16 or 17 that lied about their age to him. Child pornography could just mean nude pictures that someone underage sent to him via the internet, right? Again please do not take this as me defending him or his actions. I have 3 children & the thought of what this man might have been doing 5 doors down from us scares me beyond words. But should we blaming/accusing his father and should we be casting stones without knowing all the facts first? I would hope not.

I didn’t read that into Anthony’s comment at all. Thanks for freaking out though. It was fun to watch.

  • 10 Jim // Jan 29, 2010 at 3:19 pm

    From the Milwaukee Journal…

    @Tracie: This involves “little” children.

Heckenkamp told FBI agents he began using the Internet to view adult pornography about 10 years ago, according to the complaint. He said he began searching for child pornography about a year ago after paying for the encrypted IP address, the complaint says.

Heckenkamp also told agents “that he was attracted to females of all ages, but preferred girls 12 to 13 years old,” according to the complaint.

Well that’s super freaky creepy since that’s how old the girls are he’s teaching. And how old the youngest was in his classroom.

Elmbrook = FAIL! They’ve got to do a better job of screening for this kind of loser.

  • 12 Anthony // Jan 29, 2010 at 4:46 pm

The Feds also found marijuana and a pipe in his coffee table drawer.

You can read the entire federal criminal complaint at http://media2.620wtmj.com/breakingnews/HeckerkampComplaint.pdf It’s pretty gross though.

Edit – He said it was gross. A couple of you are concerned about the link. It’s going to stay as it gives the charges against this teacher.

YOU ARE WARNED THAT IF YOU CLICK TO READ THAT REPORT YOU KNOW IT’S UGLY AND WON’T COME WHINING TO ME!

“Elmbrook = FAIL! They’ve got to do a better job of screening for this kind of loser.”

How do you propose Elmbrook screens for something that happens behind closed doors? I’m not trying to sound snotty… I really have no idea how a school district would do this. Teachers already need to be fingerprinted by the police and submit to a state background check before they can even get a license.

  • 14 Cindy // Jan 31, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Get inside their little heads. Also, it pays to be aware that these folks are being hired because someone’s already in the district. Here it’s a dad. In Sprinkel’s case it was long-time friend Joe Schroeder.

I stand by my original statement.

  • 15 pantheman // Feb 1, 2010 at 5:11 am

    “Get inside their little heads.”

Again, I don’t disagree with your stand, but I ask again: How? What does it mean to “get inside their little heads”? I still don’t see how it can be done. If a new hire doesn’t have a criminal record or any “red flags” from their past, how can a school district possibly predict one? I still think that is is a question that has yet to be answered by any agency, district, business, etc. Schools SHOULD be able to provide safe staff, but how can they possibly be sure?

  • 16 Whatever II // Feb 1, 2010 at 6:08 am

pantheman: Agree. Not really sure how you screen for this…any help HR people??

I also have a feeling that child porn users are very similar to other addicts. Whether it’s drugs, sex, alcohol, shopping, gambling, etc. Some are so good at covering up their addiction that they end up fooling those closest to them for years.

  • 17 Cindy // Feb 1, 2010 at 6:53 am

Well, there’s a reason I gave up political blogging. I was tired of hanging out with people who insisted upon walking around with their heads in awkward places.

Not to worry. My child is out of the district soon enough. You may continue with your ignorance regarding the safety of our children, but mine will no longer be involved.

Next some idiot will argue child porn viewers are people, too. Geez.

BTW, again, pantheman one answer is to nix the nepotism.

  • 18 The Lorax // Feb 1, 2010 at 9:10 am

How about listen to kids? In both cases, several students (including myself) had the creepsies on both of these dudes.

In Sprinkel’s case, administration ignored some student complaints regarding his behavior.

  • 19 Anthony // Feb 1, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Cindy does make a good point: the District needs to somehow improve their inspection processes. But the only question is how?

Meanwhile, Heckencamp is officially on BadBadTeacher, a site that profiles teachers arrested for sick crimes. http://badbadteacher.com/jared-heckenkamp/

  • 20 Cindy // Feb 2, 2010 at 10:26 am

(Sorry Lorax, you were whacked by Askimet and I just caught it.)

I agree completely. I said the same thing to my husband the other night. Kids have good instincts about this stuff. Teachers overhear things like what the youngest used as a nickname for Heckenkamp. That might need to be considered rather than dismissed in the future.

  • 21 Anthony // Feb 2, 2010 at 12:32 pm

You’re absolutely right Cindy. Listen to the students for once! We aren’t just dumb learning machines. We do actually have some brains in us! And I always knew something was wrong with Heckencamp, like many others.

  • 22 someguy // Feb 2, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I had Mr. Heckenkamp in sixth and seventh grade, eighth grade I had Mr. Olestrom from Wisconsin Hills who came in for only first hour. I thought Mr Heckenkamp was a great teacher until I found this out. Then I felt like Mr. Heck what are you doing to yourself? why did you have to do something so stupid. I just don’t understand.

    Clown Baby

Though I was able to tell your comment was local and legitimate, I really couldn’t stomach the content. Since it’s my blog, I pulled it.

    You may go away now.
