Students at East started finals today with the news that Karen passed away this morning.
You’ll have to forgive me, but if I ever heard Karen’s last name, I don’t remember it. This household always knew her as Karen the lot attendant. She’s kept three Kilkenny children safe, and for that I want to thank her.
Karen, may your soul rest in peace.
Karen Bruckner.
Thanks Lorax.
I missed her today. Didn’t know she had died, but looked for her and felt a sense of loss that I did not see her. Always enjoyed her smiling face, and a friendly word as I waited for my turn to manuever out of the parking lot. She had a keen sense of justice, measurement, timing, and safety: She knew just how many cars to direct from each lane for optimal efficiency. I often felt my tiny car, dwarfed in a sea of minivans and SUV’s, would never have a chance without Karen. Today I waited twice as long as usual to exit the lot. Yet wait I did, as most of the other drivers seemed to be on their cell phones, and not paying close enough attention to avoid t-boning us.
Karen, you made a difference: you made a bit of the world a kinder, gentler place.
RIP Karen.
Do you know how long Karen worked at BEHS? Back in the day, we called the parting lot attendant ‘The Van Lady.” I actually wrote an article about her for the Spartan Banner, but that was a long, long time ago.
Well, there was still a van involved, but I don’t know. I bet another reader might, though.
The value of acquaintance is vastly underestimated. By a college professor of mine.
I really liked that, Tom. Folks, if you get a chance, read the link he gave.
Karen worked at BEHS since 1987.
I wish I had a transcript of Bower’s announcement – it would post it. I know there is also going to be a visitation for students and parents, but the family is still planning it.
Tom, thank you. That is an excellent piece! Cindy, you are right – everyone should read it.
