Are you making yours yet?
So far the count is 11 for dinner. One of the guests will be bringing a green salad, and I’m counting on the other for an appetizer.
Last year it was just four of us and I cheated by ordering a pre-made Grasch dinner. I thought it was great, but I was told not to ever do that again.
I’m having a hard time thinking out of the box this year. Do you have any surprises planned?
I’m not baking pies…Sendik’s in Elm Grove does as good a, if not better, job than me. I’ll slide them into my own pie plates if I have to! Their apple pie is terrific as well. Most of the sides I can get ready the day before. The big must for my family are the “special” (as my daugther calls them) mashed potatoes that I can ready the day before and then bake the day of Thanksgiving. They’re really rich but yummy! Turkey cooks itself with the help of the oven. I like the premade idea and did that one year too. My family protested as well. Are we really that great at making the Thanksgiving meal or are they just creatures of habit?! Everyone is relaxing and having fun and I feel like I’m in the kitchen all day. Maybe that’s part of the memories made as it’s how I remember my mom on Thanksgiving…
I have been successful in recruiting one or two to peel potatoes in the morning, but it’s mostly my job as well. I refuse to work around football, though, and they know it.
Those mashed potatoes, are they the ones with cream cheese in them that keep so well?
I agree about the football – good for you to set precedent! The baked mashed potatoes I make are from Taste of Home. My family adores them! I usually only make them at holiday meals which is why my daughter calls them “special”. Double the recipe for your size dinner – here’s the link

Thanks for the link!
For some reason this comment ended up in the spam filter. Glad I checked before I deleted them.
#2 and I would like to know what we can bring. He volunteered to peel potatoes and I have a family recipe that you can prep in advance and throw in the oven later if you want us to bring mashed.
Then you’re it. Mashed potatoes for 11, which really means mashed potatoes for about 20.
I’ll still make the gravy.
Ok, It’s time to think about this for real.
18-22 pound turkey
Stuffing with apples and pecans or stuffing with water chestnuts (must have crunch!)
Steamed green beans with yellow and red peppers
(Potatoes)
Gravy
(Green Salad)
Pear and cranberry chutney (I’d share the recipe, but the MJS won’t let it be linked anymore!)
Rolls & butter
Apple pie
2 pumpkin pies
Pecan pie
whipped cream
I sure feel like I’m forgetting something.
Ahah!
Baked sweet potato chunks with honey glaze
Sweet potatoes are my favorite Thanksgiving dish! Both sides of my family have their own recipes and both are delicious.
And for dessert, y’all now that nothing beats a Loaf and Jug pie, right?
